Information & Communication
NCDC has been undertaking various activities in information and communication sector. In the communication part, NCDC has been continuing its intranet program in coordination and support from Engineers Without Borders (EWB), Colorado, USA. In the part of intranet, NCDC has established intranet system set up between NCDC office Ilam and Namsaling, Sub health post of Namsaling to Sringfring hospital Ilam and Namsaling High school to Mahendra Ratna Multiple campus Ilam, and among them too. The main objective of establishing intranet is to provide health services to the community through telemedicine technology, establish remote/online education system, information sharing with different health services and better internet services to all intranet bounded parties. Due to inefficient internet access in Ilam, the system has not been working as per expectation, however, NCDC has been trying its best to provide better internet services in the year 2009.
Geographical Information System (GIS)
The application of geospatial sciences has spread very fast and wide over the past few decades and the use of GIS is getting popular now-a-days. Land-cover/land-use information is recognized as important inputs for rural and urban planning whereas social and resource information are useful to picture out the community indicator. Currently, the form of spatial information on social and land characteristics are playing a vital role while making SDPs.
NCDCs has been using Geographical Information System (GIS) in Collaboratiove Sustainable Development Planning (CSDP) project from 2001 which was recommended by evaluation report of Nepal District Environmental Planning project in 2000 and also it is a first phase program of CSDPP. In every CCLDP, NCDC has been incorporating different level of GIS maps including land-use/land-cover map, social map, population density map, erosion hazard map, and resource map and other environment related maps. GIS is being typically used to analyze the communies needs, create different maps and to analyze database of different projects of NCDC. Successful implementation of GIS used by NCDC includes identification of the potential hydropower area in Eastern Nepal, solid waste disposal site in Fikkal VDC of Ilam, identification of deforestation in Patenagi area of Puwamajhuwa VDC, and delineation of corridor in Trans-boundary area between Nepal and India of eastern area of Ilam district. Similarly, CSDP evaluation report 2004 has clearly indicated that the use of GIS in planning is an example of qualitative SDP compared to other.
